Worldview Training

How to ‘World Proof’ your Kids

By Jay Wegter

Our task as parents, as ministers, and as mentors is to bring the ‘total truth’ of the Christian world view to bear upon all of life.  We must not retreat, but be proactive in seeking to erase the fact/value split that exists in the minds of those under our care.

Countless professing believers are living a ‘disconnect’ between what they say they believe and how they structure their lives.  For them the truths of Christianity do not form a unified view of all reality.  Scriptural truth claims are all too often relegated to an ‘upper story’ category that is segmented off from personal behavior and values.

Our young people are particularly vulnerable.  A full 50% of professing evangelical college students enrolled in a secular universities wind up abandoning their faith by graduation.  By contrast, 99% of secular college students grounded in Christian worldview stay true to their faith through graduation (stats from Summit Ministries).

As Nancy Pearcey says in her book, Total Truth, the public/private split hamstrings our efforts at both personal and cultural renewal.  Ultimately it reflects a division in the concept of truth itself, which functions as a gatekeeper, ruling Christian principles out of bounds in the public arena.  Only by ‘crafting’ a full-orbed Christian worldview can we liberate Christianity from its cultural captivity.

Only by the total truth set forth in the Christian worldview can we unify our fragmented lives and recover spiritual power.  Christianity is not just religious truth but truth about total reality.  It is total truth (flyleaf, Total Truth).

One’s ideas about the world are not merely held intellectually; they shape the way we live.  Thus worldview is the very foundation for one’s ethics, values, decisions, and behavior.   Only the Christian worldview fits the real world, and only the Christian world view can be lived out in every area of life.  What is ultimate reality?  It is nothing less than God’s blueprint for mankind found in His Word.

The Person of Christ is at the center of our worldview.  Christ’s ‘cosmic’ lordship (Col 1) addresses every area of life.  His lordship over creation, redemption, the realm of spirits, the Church, human history, all knowledge, the material world, and the final judgment leaves nothing outside of His sovereign government.

Our Christian worldview has the lordship of Christ as its ‘Unifier.’  Christ’s lordship and God’s all-encompassing plan in Christ destroys the fact/value split.  All truth is unified in Christ who is the purpose and consummation of all human history.

Believers are immersed in a postmodern age that wars against Christianity by means of philosophy.  Man-made philosophies labor to keep Christianity out of the category of unified truth and into the ‘upper story’ compartment of non-reality.

As Christians we are called not only to personal faith but also to a biblical worldview; one that has the power to transform the world today.
