The Great Doctrines of the Bible![]()
This book consists of self-study lessons that are designed to guide you to develop your own theology directly from the Bible. You may preview (below) the first lesson on General Revelation. I must give credit to Gordon Lewis for the basic approach and much of the content is taken from his book Decide for Yourself. However, I have done much editing and enlarging upon Lewis' work. Lessons:
This book is the result of a Bible study I taught during 2001 to a group of young adults at a church in Lancaster, California. This is not merely a book to read. It is a type of catechism which is a method of teaching Christian doctrine by means of questions and answers. However, this book does not provide the answers to the questions. The approach requires the student to discover his or her own theology directly from the Holy Scriptures. The value of this study will be greatly diminished if the student does not look up the Scripture verses and summarize in his or her own words the doctrine discovered. Therefore, it is essential to actively dig into God's Word and find out what God has said and then formulate a summary statement about that particular doctrine. This approach is of immense value in that the end result would be a theology that the student "owns" rather than what some theologian has said. Each doctrine also has a Scripture memory verse to help the student remember the doctrine and share it with others. Also, the student may continue to develop this text in the years to come by adding additional notes to the binder. For now, only Lessons 1-9 have been edited. In the future I hope to add the following doctrines: The nature of man, the image of God in man, the nature of man's sin, the incarnation, Christ's incarnate life, atonement, regeneration and conversion, sanctification, good works, the nature of the church, the mission of the church to the world, the mission of the church to the believer, the millennium, the tribulation and the rapture, and personal eschatology.
